The Sublime & Beautiful vs. Reality

This blog is a record of one man's struggle to search for scientific, philosophical, and religious truth in the face of the limitations imposed on him by economics, psychology, and social conditioning; it is the philosophical outworking of everyday life in contrast to ideals and how it could have been.

The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order and harmony which has been imposed on it by God
and which He revealed to us in the language of mathematics.

W: LP: GRP: CSL: The Pilgrim's Regress

The Pilgrim's Regress: An Allegorical Apology for Christianity Reason and RomanticismThe Pilgrim's Regress: An Allegorical Apology for Christianity Reason and Romanticism by C.S. Lewis

I thought that I had read this book by C.S. Lewis, but now that I am into it most of the way, I find I have not read it before. I plan to re-read this book a few years after I will finish it soon. The allegorical character of the story is clear, but I think that Lewis is telling the story of his own journey toward Faith in Christ. I have not read much of Lewis' scholarly writings (on literature and philosophy, except the writings that relate to Christian apologetics), so I know that I am missing some allusions and satire of various philosophical positions. When I have come to a better understanding of ALL of Lewis' writings, I shall revisit this story, and I know that I will enjoy it even more.

No time for deep analysis now, but the next time...maybe there is a paper or two to be written on some of the ideas and concepts.:}

W: LP: GRP: Franz Mohr with Edith Schaeffer

My Life with the Great Pianists,My Life with the Great Pianists, by Franz Mohr
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The content of this book deserves at least 4.5 stars, but the poor organization and slightly above average writing made this a chore to get through (at least until part 3). I think this book would have been better if it was arranged as a regular biography of Franz Mohr (that is in chronological order), and then polished a little more. For these reasons it gets a three star rating.

Personal Update: I'm baaack.

As someone might tell from my recent upsurge in Facebook traffic, I am back online via my homemade workstation. 3Ware owns LSI (the manufacturer of my controller card), but they were very good about replacing my dead controller card. I was able to plug the card in (this time installing an extra slot fan for additional cooling) and the machine booted right up and is running great. Immediately I performed a data backup and bookmarked the 32 tabs on my browser and then exported the book marks to an html file. Everything seems to be running well. Now to get back to reading books instead of the information ocean...
